Taking the FA Cup Out of England

Cardiff City won the FA Cup in 1927, beating Arsenal 1–0 in the final.

This was Arsenal's first FA Cup Final, as well as Cardiff's. The goal was scored in the 74th minute, and was widely regarded as having resulted from a mistake by Arsenal's Welsh goalkeeper, Dan Lewis. A shot from Cardiff's Scottish striker Hughie Ferguson had little power, but it squirmed out of Lewis's grasp; in his attempt to recover, Lewis succeeded only in knocking the ball over the line with his elbow.

Lewis blamed his brand new jersey for the error, claiming that the wool was too greasy for him to grip the ball properly. Ever since that day, according to club legend, no Arsenal goalkeeper has played in a new jersey unless it has been washed first.

Cardiff also reached the final in 2008, this time losing 1–0 to Portsmouth. Arsenal, to date, have reached the final twenty times in total – winning thirteen and losing seven.
